Cha Cha Cha
Cha Cha Cha is a style of dance derived from two other dances, it is a derivative of Mambo through its Latin music and it is also a stepchild of Swing (Lindy, as it is danced with a triple step and a break). When the music was introduced, it sound like a slow Mambo, and Cuban dancers used a slight triple hip undulation on the slow count. Gradually this was changed to a triple step on the slow count and the Cha Cha Cha was born. Musically it is counted: 1,2,3, Cha (4), Cha(&) Cha(5) (a Cha is 1/2 beat), 6,7 Cha (8) Cha (&) Cha (1). Partner dancing is incorporated but you do not need to bring a partner.

Salsa/ Mambo
Salsa is a dance form with origins from the Cuban Son (circa 1920s) and Afro-Cuban dance (specifically Afro-Cuban Rumba (dance). It is commonly associated with the salsa music style. The modern dance from New York was popularized in the 1980s by Eddie Torres, who was a 2nd generation New York Puerto Ricans. This style is sometimes danced to mambo music, but more often to salsa dura (old-school salsa). It is termed “mambo on 2” because the break, or direction change, in the basic step occurs on count 2. New York style salsa emphasizes harmony with the percussive instruments in salsa music, such as the congas, timbales, and clave, since many or all of those instruments often mark the second beat in the music. The etiquette of New York Style is strict about remaining in the “slot”. There is greater emphasis on performing “shines” in which dancers separate themselves and dance solo with intricate footwork and styling for a time—suspected origins from Swing and New York Tap. Partner dancing is incorporated but you do not need to bring a partner. Our salsa classes have children and adult levels.
